.
my 4500 kilometer trek came to an end last night in victoria.. the move went well, as one would expect when one lives out of a suitcase and duffel bag in a 7x13' room.... hope to see the vast majority of you come visit at one time or another.... i have to save vancouver island, and time is running out.. tata.
Oh, you've moved to a beautiful place. When you can, go up Island to Tofino and see the Old Growth Forests, Clayquot Sound or to the Bamfield Marine Research Station.
Lots and lots of interesting things to see.
so how many of you have or had cottages as dubs?
now do any of you recall any families having them in your hall?.
now if so did these families retreat to these locations during the summer months?.
Hi Beans,
Well, I know what you are talking about, but here in Alberta, a cottage is usually referred to as a cabin, even if it is a fully loaded 3000 sq ft house.
Cottage=cabin= weekend or summer getaway home usually in a rural location such as a lake. Intent is recreation and rest, reality is money pit and one more yard and house to take care of.
We have a small, rustic cabin at a local lake, but I am not JW, so I can't answer your question, although I don't know of any properties owned by JW families on our lake.....lots of church camps, though. From what I have heard some JWs may own recreational property (cabins in the woods, or places to camp) towards the Rocky Mountains, where there is a fairly active group of JWs in the very small communities along the highway heading west.
dub memories part 4
at the end of the last part, my parents had just arrived back from the tuesday night meeting after the theocratic ministry school with the elders.
its quite amazing that i still remember the names of all the various meetings so clearly, considering that im writing this 4 years after my disassociation.
Fascinating reading, SYN. I am always curious how some people are able to leave the WT and others stay puppets. It must take enormous courage to make that step away from all you've known. What is your relationship with your family now?
ok here is my situation, i met this girl that is a jw....she is not that heavily into her religion but we talked for a long time face to face and she is very hesitant on attempting to start a relationship.
so i have been researching for the past couple of days to undersatnd her religion and see if there is anything that i could use to dissuade her from saying no.
so last night we talked about the ifs, and buts, and such stuff like that.
Radium,
An Apostate is anyone who has turned their back on their religion. To a JW, an apostate is any JW, who even questions any of the the policies or interpretations of the Watchtower Society. To a JW, an apostate is extremely evil and has turned his back on God (who they call Jehovah). This website would be considered an apostate site, and very evil. An active JW would not want to spend time on this website as it might weaken their faith due to the bad people involved and the influence of Satan or demons. There is no independent thought allowed, at all. For example, you could question the Catholic church's stand on birth control quite openly, and no one would blink. A JW could not mention that there were circumstances where it it would be good to accept a blood transfusion without getting into big trouble, possibly getting disfellowshipped (thrown out of the religion). If they are disfellowshipped they are shunned by all the other JWs, even family and friends. This is to force them back into line, and is considered to be for their own good.
The word, apostate, is used in a somewhat cynical, positive way in the X-JW culture (in an outsider's viewpoint), referring to someone who has left the cult and sees how they were programmed, and is, perhaps, vocal about the problems with the Watchtower. On this site, it is a very good thing to be an apostate and the title is worn with pride.

Well put, jws.
right on people - we got another story.. http://www.canoe.ca/torontonews/ts.ts-09-10-0027.html.

church, elders sued over alleged coverup.
Running Man,
I think that you have a point about the papers worrying about JW overload in their stories. The words "Jehovahs Witness" were in a much smaller, lighter font than the rest of the headline.....perhaps 1/4 the size. Could congregation members have phoned their local paper and complained that the coverage was not balanced?

There was a good sized article in the Edmonton Journal. Unfortunately, it was quite hidden away as a sidebar on the auto classified adds page. At least they covered the story, even though no one will find it.
i've just registered on this site.
i'd like to kick off by asking this wealth of experience what your most successful witnessing to witnesses tips are.
so if you're a non-and-has-never-been-a-jw, what stops them in their tracks?
Her boyfriend is. Born and raised in a devout household.... He does get away with things that surprise me, but his parents definately object to his affection for her. They are very young, but the relationship has gone on for over 2 years now. He said he wanted to be with her forever, to marry her. I think (hope) things are cooling now, but they have been so intensely connected it was scary. You might laugh at me for worrying, when he is only almost 16, but if you saw them together you would realize he was courting her, and sometimes she just couldn't get past her affection for him to see the problems.

Thanks Pat,
But if they have been born into a JW family and grew up in it, do they even have a pre-cult identity.
Spanner, how did you get mixed up with a JW family??? That is my big fear for my daughter. If you aren't comfortable talking about it publicly, you can e mail me.
